Diane LaFaso Skullr is a respected leader, innovator, and proactive advocate. With over a decade serving as an association Executive Director and a successful 22-year history as the founder of a boutique healthcare staffing agency, Diane built her career on guiding others, delivering the highest quality of service, and championing her industries.

In September 2022, Diane’s life took a drastic pivot when she was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer, metastasizing to her lung. Given only a 14% chance of surviving five years, she approached her diagnosis with the same fierce determination she applied to her career by deciding that she was going to bet on herself. Though naturally a private person who rarely shared personal details, Diane realized that the terrifying realities of a cancer journey—from the grueling physical treatments to the hidden financial and emotional burdens—needed to be shared to help both herself and others.

This realization was NOT BROKEN: The Unfiltered Daily Truth in Fighting Cancer. In her writing, Diane sheds light on the often-unspoken hardships of the disease by revealing the raw, embarrassing, and intimidating thoughts she initially kept locked away. She writes openly about the dread of “scanxiety,” the devastating side effects of chemotherapy and radiation, the workplace discrimination she faced following her diagnosis, and the complex emotional battle between hoping for the future and planning for the end. Her unpolished, deeply honest journal entries aim to help fellow warriors find emotional clarity, remind them that they are not crazy, and prove that they are never truly alone.

Today, Diane proudly embraces her hard-earned title as a cancer warrior. When she isn’t advocating for proactive health measures like repeatedly urging everyone over forty-five to get a colonoscopy.

She finds her greatest joy in her family. She is a devoted mother to her son, and a fiercely proud grandmother of four grandchildren, whose activities and sporting events remain her ultimate “happy place”.

Diane is now in remission and embracing her ‘new normal’ alongside her dog, Princess, and her beloved family. A self-described ‘Warrior,’ Diane draws on her experiences of resilience and recovery to help others find emotional strength in their own journeys. When she isn’t spending time with her four grandchildren, she is dedicated to her writing and her next work: a deep dive into the challenges and triumphs of navigating life in recovery and remission.
